Metaventure® ApproachSyncretics’ Metaventure® approach teaches people about leadership, teamwork and change by using compelling adventure and survival stories of individuals and groups who have gone to The Edge. Why use such stories? For one thing, adventure and survival stories are engaging, and so they capture the attention and imagination of busy managers and executives. And compared to lecture methods, stories are better at helping people absorb new information and ideas. As a result, the transfer of learning into application is much more likely to take place. Possibly most important, our Metaventure® stories serve up numerous metaphors that enable individuals to see the challenges and opportunities of leadership and teamwork in a new light. When people begin to use new types of metaphor – called generative metaphor – as a basis for examining their own situation, they can achieve new insights and deepen their understanding of issues. For example, the metaphor of “abandoning ship” can enable someone to think differently about his or her own challenge of changing their team’s mission and goals. Once a story turns into metaphor, people can more easily connect new concepts back to their own job. And sensitive issues can be explored through story and metaphor, enabling “real” conversations to take place. Our Metaventure® stories serve as the foundation of our Presentations and Programs. Two of our most popular stories are those of the Shackleton’s 1914 Trans-Antarctic Expedition, and the 1998 Sydney-to-Hobart Ocean Sailing Race. We use these stories in our other work as well, such as our Organizational Change Consulting, Leadership Team Development, and Leadership Effectiveness Coaching offerings. |
