Southern Ocean

Antartica is completely surrounded by the Southern Ocean - half of which freezes in the winter.  It is rough, windy, and extremely cold.

Elephant Island

Shackleton's crew waited on Elephant Island for 128 days while he and five others sailed a 22 foot life boat to South Georgia Island, over 800 miles away.

Iceberg

Antarctica is home to gigantic icebergs. The largest iceberg ever recorded was found there--it was about the size of Belgium and so large, it had its own weather system.

Leopard Seal

The leopard seal is the second largest species of seal in the Antarctic, and is near the top of the Antarctic food chain.  Bulls can weigh up 1,000 lbs.

Pack Ice

Pack ice is formed when drift (floating) ice is driven together into a single, large mass.  Typically, areas of pack ice are identified by high percentages of surface coverage by ice - usually between 80-100%.
